During the Depression, cornbread, molasses, and milk made a meal. Eventually Oscar found work as a janitor in the old Huntington High School that my father attended before the new East High School was completed in 1940.

Materials in it are mostly true and entirely factual. But the folder is also partial. It is the light fiction version of my father’s federal employment intended for people who didn’t need to know anything more about him. The story it spins is one of a rather ordinary government worker employed by the Veterans Administration. He had two overseas assignments—in the American embassies in Rome and in London—but his official dummy job from 1946 until 1969 was as a contact officer for the VA. Armed with the knowledge that what the file contained was a documented version of the truth rather the whole truth, I began a critical reading of these materials.

But nobody had an explanation for why or how it might have occurred. During these interviews it felt as if we were investigating a missing stranger rather than a blood relative. There often followed an empty, awkward silence, the kind of silence that reveals that, as awkward as it is, there is nothing else for anyone to say. Or perhaps it can be interpreted as a silence that conceals something too hard to say, something bad or just too difficult to articulate. There must be some reasonable explanation.
