Later in the 19505, at the exact moment of the rise to fame that proved to be his undoing, Jackformed a relationship with a much younger woman. As she herself explains thoughtfully in Minor Characters, Joyce Johnson presented Kerouac with an interesting dilemma. By this time he was in his mid-thirties, and most of his best writing was behind him. Ahead lay many minor debacles of his alcoholic demise. But Johnson was herself an aspiring novelist who eventually achieved success as an editor and writer.

Almost nine years later, when I made contact with Jim in the process of writing this book, he solved the mystery for me. Most of what Edie said after Jim became her secretary was what he had coached her to say, based on his own careful reading of the several biographies of Jack Kerouac. So if some of what Edie said on stage in 1987 sounded as though Gerry Nicosia had scripted it, that was because of Jim's diligent attempts to prevent Edie from reinventing her past. His scrupulousness, however, eventually led him into conflict with her.

Though it seems unlikely that he was unaware of Joan's existence —why wouldn't he have heard of her, just as she had heard of him, through the grapevine? — there you have it.
