18 In December 1817 Streicher suggested that Beethoven use an upright piano because it would be easier to fit a hearing aid. When Thomas Broadwood19 sent him a piano from London in 1818 he was delighted with it and refused to let anyone tune it, saying that it would be spoilt. When he was lent a Graf piano in 1825 it was fitted with an extra sounding board over the strings, to which was fitted a hearing aid on Mälzel’s advice. Between 1816 and 1819 Beethoven completed very few major works. Many of his earlier compositions were published during these years but fewer new ones were written, although he spent longer working on his compositions, sketching his ideas and considering every note, often revising works right up to the date of publication.

In the mean- time, in April 1817, he moved his lodgings closer to the school.
